After all, how important is the Diwali festival in the Sanatan tradition, it can be understood in such a way that exactly 15 days after it is celebrated by the common people on the new moon of Kartik month (Karthik Purnima), the deities also celebrate Diwali with great pomp. 

Religious Significance of Dev Deepawali

There is a mythological belief about the festival of Dev Deepawali, celebrated on the full moon day of Kartik month, that on this day Lord Shiva killed a demon named Tripurasur. After which all the gods and goddesses expressed their happiness by lighting a lamp in the joy of victory over Tripurasur.

It is also a religious belief that on this day Lord Vishnu took the form of a fish to maintain the universe. It is also believed that when Lord Vishnu wakes up from eternal sleep, the deities worship Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, along with Lord Vishnu. Worship of Lord Shaligram and Tulsi ji also has special significance on the day of Dev Deepawali.

The holy festival of Dev Deepawali is celebrated with great pomp in Kashi. On this day lakhs of diyas are lit at the ghats on the banks of river Ganga to welcome and worship the deities. On the day of Dev Deepawali, when lamps are donated on the ghats of the Ganges in Varanasi, it seems as if the entire Devlok has descended on the earth. People from all over the country and abroad reach here to see this supernatural scene.

*What to do on Dev Diwali?*

 On this festival, devotees bathe on the banks of the Ganges and donate lamps, on this day bathing in the Ganges is considered holy. Oil lamps are offered to Goddess Ganga as a mark of reverence. Ganga Aarti is performed.

कार्तिक मास की पूर्णिमा के दिन मनाए जाने वाले देव दीपावली पर्व के बारे में पौराणिक मान्यता है कि इसी दिन भगवान शिव ने त्रिपुरासुर नाम के राक्षस का वध किया था. जिसके बाद सभी देवी-देवताओं ने त्रिपुरासुर पर मिली विजय की खुशी में दीप जलाकर अपनी प्रसन्नता को प्रकट किया था.

धार्मिक मान्यता यह भी है कि इसी दिन भगवान विष्णु ने सृष्टि का पालन करने के लिए मत्स्य रूप धारण किया था. मान्यता यह भी है कि भगवान श्री विष्णु के चिरनिद्रा से जागने पर देवी-देवता धन की देवी मां लक्ष्मी की पूजा भगवान श्री विष्णु के साथ करते हैं. देव दीपावली के दिन भगवान शालिग्राम और तुलसी जी की पूजा का भी विशेष महत्व है..

देव दीपावली का पावन पर्व काशी में बड़ी धूमधाम से मनाया जाता है. इस दिन गंगा नदी के किनारे घाटों पर लाखों की संख्या में दीये जलाकर देवी-देवताओं का स्वागत एवं पूजन किया जाता है. देव दीपावली वाले दिन जिस समय वाराणसी में गंगा के घाटों पर दीपदान होता है, उसे देखकर मानों ऐसा लगता है कि पूरा देवलोक पृथ्वी पर उतर आया हो. इस अलौकिक दृश्य को देखने के लिए लोग यहां पर देश-विदेश से पहुंचते हैं.

इस त्योहार पर भक्त गंगा तट पर स्नान करके दीपदान करते हैं, इस दिन गंगा में स्नान को पवित्र माना जाताहै. देवी गंगा को श्रद्धा के प्रतीक के रूप में तेल के दीपक अर्पित किए जाते हैं. गंगा आरती की जाती है.
